Manual or electric toothbrush - which one is better?

Have you ever been to a party and the next thing you know you’re in a conversation about what toothbrush is better—manual or electric?

No—those aren’t the topics you discuss at a party?

Well, it must be us dental field people that get in those talks then!

Whether you debate with friends—or with yourself—it’s time we talk about the question on everyone’s mind when standing in the toothbrush aisle: manual or electric?

Manual vs. Electric Toothbrush

Brushing your teeth is non-negotiable (preferably twice a day for two minutes each time).

How you brush your teeth—now that’s negotiable.

The ADA (American Dental Association) gives the green light for the use of both manual and electric toothbrushes in its efficacy of plaque removal (which can cause disease and decay).

So, which one to use?

Let’s talk about the pros and cons of each.

Manual Toothbrush

Most of us start out, as kids, with a Star Wars or Barbie manual toothbrush as we wiggle our way through two minutes of brushing and try not to forget those hard to reach places our parents keep telling us not to overlook.

Let’s see why we may or may not move on to an electric toothbrush.

MANUAL TOOTHBRUSH PROS

• Cost effective—not only are they free with your dental appointment, but you can also buy them at the dollar store if you’re really looking for a bargain.

• Availability—purchase options are on every corner (super helpful when traveling), no charging station needed, and a manual brush can go just about anywhere with you (especially a nice-sized purse).

MANUAL TOOTHBRUSH CONS

• No timer—if you’re the type to lose track of time and go beyond two minutes, your gums could suffer. Brushing too long and hard can damage teeth and gums.

• Heavy lifting—your arms and hands will do most of the work with a manual toothbrush, especially in every nook and cranny of your mouth.

Electric Toothbrush

One day Star Wars is helping you brush your teeth and the next day a vibrating toothbrush is cleaning your teeth.

Why the transition to electric? Let’s look at the pros and cons.

ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH PROS

• Timer—this option will automatically turn off in two minutes, so you won’t go mindless over-brushing. This can also save your teeth and gums from damage.

• Helpful for limited mobility—if a disability limits your mobility, an electric toothbrush can do the heavy lifting for you.

• Decreases more plaque—after three months studies show plaque and gingivitis are reduced more with electric toothbrushes.

ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH CONS

• Cost—starting under $20 and ranging up to $300 (with the additional cost of replacement heads), you definitely will not find these toothbrushes in the dollar section.

• More to carry—the convenience goes down with a charging station, cords, and potential batteries to lug around.

• Vibration—the feeling of vibrating bristles on your teeth can turn some people off completely.

So, what is the best toothbrush—manual or electric?
